What are the Inner Development Goals (IDGs)?

The Inner Development Goals (IDGs) represent a transformative approach to personal and societal growth, emphasizing the critical role of inner development in achieving sustainable global progress. Inspired by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the IDGs aim to foster the inner capacities and qualities needed to address complex global challenges effectively.

At Turning Ground, we use the IDG’s as an evolving guide to understand the system of inner, inter, and outer capacities that need particular attention in this time of what Joanna Macy calls The Great Turning. If we are to find new ways of seeing, sensing, imagining, relating and acting in order for a life-affirming culture, the IDG’s offer us a great map to base our program design around.

Context

The IDGs were conceptualized in response to the growing recognition that external solutions alone are insufficient to tackle the multifaceted issues of our time, such as climate change, inequality, and social unrest. The realization that inner capacities like empathy, resilience, and critical thinking are essential for implementing sustainable solutions led to the formulation of these goals. The IDGs draw from various disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy, to provide a holistic framework for inner growth.

Purpose

The primary purpose of the IDGs is to nurture the inner qualities that enable individuals and communities to thrive in a rapidly changing world. These goals serve as a guide for personal development, encouraging people to cultivate the skills and mindsets necessary for effective and compassionate action. By focusing on inner transformation, the IDGs aim to create a foundation for sustainable development that is both deep-rooted and far-reaching.

The IDGs are structured around five key dimensions:

  1. Being: This dimension focuses on cultivating qualities such as inner peace, mindfulness, and emotional regulation. Developing these traits helps individuals maintain a sense of calm and clarity amid the complexities of modern life.

  2. Thinking: Critical thinking, creativity, and systems thinking are central to this dimension. It emphasizes the importance of understanding interconnectedness and approaching problems with innovative and holistic solutions.
